When Finns say "let's meet 8 o'clock", it's 8 o' clock!"

Only few days left folks!

OC Members, specially a few of them are working their asses off for you guys! To help them with organizing one of the best symposiums ever it's good to know something about the timetables and how they are made.

Year ago in the Republic of Korea we were always little bit behind schedule. We have tried to plan this years scheduleand so that there's some type of time buffers between different activities. However if you want to act like its ment in Finland, please try to be at breakfast when it's said to be and at the evening party when it's scheduled to begin. PUNCTUALITY, that's what we like in Finland. Oh well, we're still gonna wait for you but pleaaaaase, try to be on time ok?!? :)

And another thing. Here's phone numbers of the OC members - please write them down somewhere in case of emergency!

SEE YOU SOON!

A glimpse of Finnish folklore

Today boys and men named Jaakko are celebrating their name day. At the same time one Jaakko "throw's a cold stone" ("heittää kylmän kiven" in Finnish). This Finnish belief means that from this day forward water in thousands of Finnish lakes is starting to get colder and summer is slowly starting to end. If it doesn't rain on Jaakko's day the last part of summer will be good. In addition if the weather is clear and warm, Christmas will be cold.

Today sun is shining and it's hot hot hot. If this Finnish belief is true, we'll have nice weather during IFSS and it will be freezing cold in December! Little over a week, stay tuned!
If still wondering what Tombola and Auction mean, check Mikko's explanations!

Greeting from my cat, Otto!

Finnish Music!

Last year in IFSS in Republic of South Korea participants got introduced to local pop music via this band and this song. Now I think it’s only equal and for your own benefit to get to know also Finnish music well beforehand! Globally Finnish music cannot be compared to for example Swedish music what comes to popularity. One might say that one reason for this is our attitude: Finns are introvert people who don’t believe in themselves. I’d like to disagree with this opinion and to prove you that also Finns can do music, I introduce you few past and present more or less famous bands and songs!

1. Lordi.

The Eurovision Song Contest is an annual competition held among active member countries of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). Since its inauguration in 1956 Finland hasn't succeeded very well in this contest. Or hadn't until in 2006 one handsome monster came and won the competition. This Monster and his crew was called Lordi and their winning song was called Hard Rock Hallelujah.

(Source:http://static.iltalehti.fi/uutiset/loordiMZ_uu.jpg)Linkki

(Yes, we all look like that in Finland)

2. Leevi and the Leavings

For this band and for the next song I don't have much to say...It's classic and apparently LC Joensuu (Mikko N. and Veera T.) made this song very popular in IFSS 2009 in Indonesia. Enjoy the song and for the enthusiastic ones I also found lyrics translated in English- feel free to sing along! Leevi and the Leavings: Teuvo, maanteiden kuningas (Teuvo, the king of Roadways)

"Kotikaupungin katu oli hiekkainen tie

The street of the home city was a sandy road

Siinä Anglia katolleen kääntyi
Here the Anglia turned on its roof
Vielä vinossa liikennemerkkikin lie
Maybe the traffic sign is still aslant
Joka ohjausvirheestä vääntyi
It was buckled by an error in the control
Etupenkiltä lasin läpi lennettyäni
After I had flew trough the glass from the front seat
Olin pyörinyt piennarta pitkin
I rolled along the berm
Ojan pohjalla hampaita sylkiessäni
When I spitted my teeth away on the base of the ditch
Minä oksensin verta ja itkin
I chucked blood and cried

Tässä naamassa arpikin kaunistus olisi
On this face a scar would look good
Ja hampaat voi uusiksi laittaa
And the teeth can be replaced
Mut ajokortin ja Anglian kilvet vei poliisi
But my driving card and the signs of Anglia were taken by the police
Se harrastustoimintaa haittaa
It makes harm to the hobby

Rallikuskiksi pääsystä toiveita elätän
I'd want to become a rally driver
Turha on äitien sankaripoikia neuvoa
It's useless for mothers to advice the hero boys
Eihän rallia voiteta jos siellä pelätään
Nobody can win the rally if he fears
Maalissa juhlitaan voittajapoikaamme Teuvoa
The winner boy Teuvo will be celebrated at the finish

Viikonlopuksi autoa etsiessäni
In the weekend when I looked for a car
Otin lainaksi naapurin Sierran
I borrowed Sierra from neighbor
Pikatiellä mä rekkaa päin törmätessäni
When I crashed against a lorry in speedway
Kai törmäsin viimeisen kerran
Maybe I crashed my last time

Teuvo, ota meidät kyytiin
Teuvo, [please] give us a ride
Teuvo, sun Angliasi myytiin
Teuvo, your Anglia was sold"

3. Rölli

I asked other members of the OC to help me in choosing songs for this blog. Song number 2. was one of the hints and another one is Omituisten otusten kerho (Group of Weird Creatures) performed by Rölli. Rölli is (or was when I was little) a famous fairy-tale creature who lives in the forest. He isn't a bad person but a bit scary...

Song was chosen my Juho-Matti Rossi and he claimed that this song tells about the OC... Well it must say something about us if chorus keeps repeating "Group of weird creatures, group of weird creatures". Did this song really tell about the OC or forestry students as a whole?
At least I look almost the same after spending a week in a field course.

(Source: http://yle.fi/ecepic/archive/00029/satusuo_rolli_jpg_29153b.jpg

And after two weeks I look like and sound like this: Rölli:Häläpäti Hää Häläpäti laulu Rolli halapati haa Röllin Häläpätihämmää.

Again for the ones who want to learn more Finnish, listen to that song and try to learn at least the chorus: tilipitappitippitappitilipitappitippitappitilipitappitippitappitaa! Häläpätihämmää!

4. Kaija Koo

Kaija Koo and her song Tinakenkätyttö (Girl With Tin Shoes) is something I got introduced to when I enrolled in former University of Joensuu (nowadays University of Eastern Finland) and visited annual party organized by the Forestry students in Helsinki. After the party group od forestry students were sitting in a bus and suddenly one of them started singing this song as loud as possible. Everybody were staring at us but at least I was having fun trying to sing along without knowing the lyrics. Since that night I have had this weird obsession to sing this song in a karaoke bar. So far I have not succeeded but maybe someday, maybe in IFSS2011.

5. Eläkeläiset (Retired people)

They play weird music called Humppa. People are meant to dance along humppa. Hummppa taikka kuole, they sing. In English it means, humppa (dance humppa) or die. What else can you say, HUMPPAA! And to know more about this exciting dance and band, visit Eläkeläiset web site http://www.humppa.com/en/.

Humppaa taikka kuole (Dance Humppa or die)

6. Nightwish

For the last song I was encouraged to introduce more rough (?) music. I can't say anything good about this band but they were pretty popular even globally few years ago and apparently there are people who love their music. I don't but you are free to make your own judgements:

Nightwish: Nemo

What Finnish songs you have heard during IFSA-meetings or in other places??

Bored? Try these games!

Finns are not good in normal soccer, running or tennis. However we are exceptionally good in developing weird games and competitions!

Probably one of the most known is Wife Carrying World Championships, a sport where male competitors race against each other while carrying a female teammate. “The objective is for the male to carry the female through a special obstacle track in the fastest time. The sport was first introd
uced at Sonkajärvi, Finland” (Wikipedia).

Instead of telling you what it looks like, here’s few pictures of ways to carry a lady during the competition:

(Source: http://www.jaunted.com/files/admin/finlandwife.jpg)

This years competition was held 3.7.2011 and I'm happy to announce that once again Finns were the best as Estonian couple took the second place! If want to know more, watch this "tutorial" from you tube and start training!

If you don't have a wife to carry but crave for exercise in nature, try swamp soccer! In this muddy game soccer is played in swamp/mire/bog or in another muddy and wet environment. This video implies that swamp soccer might be the world's stupidest game, what do you think?

(Source: http://travel.ninemsn.com.au/img/articles/different-ball/swampsoccer.jpg)

In addition to excercise, mud bad makes your skin happy - so why not to try? :D

Another interesting game we have developed is boot throwing competition! In this game competitors try to throw a rubber boot as far as possible. If you don't have a rubber boot don't worry, Finns have national/world championship games also for mobile throwing and frying pans!

(Source: http://pic20.picturetrail.com/VOL1600/821844/18115802/372659636.jpg)

Hmm, what else do we have? Oh yes, Air Guitar World Championships in Oulu! In this competition people play guitar...but without a guitar. Last year Swedish indieband Junip recorded their music video Always in these championship games! This years competition is held 24.-27.8.2011 and if you are interested in participating or just visiting this event make sure you book your flights home enough late. For the possible participators here's few pictures on how your show could or should look like:

Pretty cool or what?! For the last but not the least comes of course...tadaa - Sauna World Championships! If you don't know what sauna and saunominen means, read my earlier post and listen this sauna song by Martti Servo and Napander.

SO, ARE YOU READY TO PLAY GAMES IN IFSS2011??

Typical Finn

In spring 2009 I spent six months studying abroad in South Africa. First two weeks in a totally different culture was shocking - people were just too slow and social for a jogging Finn. For example we had 10 minutes between lectures and in that time some of us had to walk or run over one kilometer to another lecture hall. Of course I ran sweat dropping down my face and for me it looked like everyone else was just having a sunday walk. No hurry, just smiling and enjoying time with friends.

"Are you crazyyy, hurry up or you'll be late!", I screamed to my friends.
"Relax Jenni, no worries. We'll get there".

Uhm, what did you say? Finns are described as introvert and quiet people who work and party hard but don't spend too much time talking. Normally we do not speak with strangers and for some we may seem rude. And even when we talk, our speech sounds slow and perhaps also monotonous. Underneath this hard front Finns are perhaps best possible friends: caring and loyal. So take small hammers with you and hit every rude Finn you meet and you'll get a friend - or not.

But what about the looks? What does a typical Finn look like? One way to find out is to check two quite similar but at the same time totally different blogs. First one, Hel Looks is a lifestyle blog which introduces Finnish fashion (?) via trendy people found from the streets of Helsinki and other cities. Here's two examples:

"I like to wear clothes from the 20s and the 30s. At that time clothes were made to fit the body naturally. I found my style a couple of years ago, when I was looking for a new pair of trousers.” -Lassi, 20 (Source: Hel-Looks.com)

"Colours and fairytales inspire my style. I can't wear black, but any other colours I can mix freely. Yellow is my favourite colour, as you can see. Pippi Longstocking is my style icon.” -Heidi, 25(Source: Hel.Looks.com)

However few months ago Hel Looks got a competitor from Landelooks - a blog that shows pictures of people from countryside and as I'd like to see it - of more normal people. In a way Landelooks (=country looks) is a parody of street fashion focused Hel Looks but also a blog that shows the life and look of ordinary people in Finland.

"My outfit is inspired by work. My empoyler has chosen these clothes for me and strengthnesses of this outfit are durability and casualness". -Ismo, road. (Source: Landelooks.wordpress.com)

"I bought this jacket 15 years ago from sale because of hard wind. Mittens are from Tallinn, Estonia..I only dress for myself!" -Granny Marra, road. (Source: Landelooks.wordpress.com)

Pretty good looking people, aren't we? For the end I have to link also one video for you. It's a part of one Finnish movie Miesten vuoro (Men's turn) where Finnish men sit in sauna and simply talk about life. In this clip a man has just got out from sauna and his friend - a bear named Juuso - comes for a visit.

What do you think about us? What is your perception of Finns?

Greetings from OC member who stays in Indonesia

Hello at the first time from the 3rd Mikko of the OC,

Once upon a time there was a meeting called IFSS in Bulgaria (I need to mention that the year was 2008). Two guys from Finland sitting in the “sauna” bus and looked outside window for the nice view of Bulgarian fields and forests. The other guy started a long, “Finnish way” discussion:

1st guy: Mikko?

15 seconds silence

2nd guy: Yes Tero?

Again 15 seconds silence

1st guy: We should have IFSS in Finland

Again 15 seconds silence

2nd Guy: ....(He does not say anything but nod his head as a mark of agree)

..

..

...

(Discussion is over...

.....did you expect to have a longer discussion?? Not in Finland :P)

After this long and really fruitful discussion they both know exactly what it will be.

That was the beginning of idea of having IFSS 2011 in Finland. After that disucussion several similar, long and nice discussions (in Finnish way) have been made. The team of OC has become bigger and bigger. At the same time when the old generation falls to the work life, there has been always a new generation who took the responsibility. There have been many sweaty moments after Bulgarian “sauna” bus. The first one was in Indonesia 2009 where our team manage to beat Germany in tight competition to get IFSS in Finland. Second sweaty moment was in Korea 2010 where we presented our first plan and answered for the questions regarding organizing of IFSS 2011 here in Finland.

There is only one left. It might be not so sweaty because we are in Finland, land of lakes and cool climate, but still the biggest challenge for us. During this 3 years project we are finally getting at the end and the OC will be happy to see you in our lovely home country. I can’t wait for that moment. Can you?

Why IFSS is so wonderful. Not only the nice road trip around the hosting country but exciting Gas. Do you feel you have potential to be the next leader of GA in Turkey and be a part of IFSA Official team? I would be happy to talk with you in IFSS and encourage you to be IFSA Official. I can say it will be a lot of work but it gives more back. It is not only one mark in your CV, you also learn new ways to communicate, manage things and lead different people. We IFSA 7, Officials and all the consulting members are happy to answer all of your questions about being IFSA Official. Don’t be shy but remember to take this challenge serious. I have spent three really hectic years but this time has been the best of my life. So please, REMEMBER TO READ all the information that can be found from IFSS 2011 website, IFSA website and if you don’t find what you are seeking for, don’t hesitate to contact ifsa7@googlegroups.com

At the end a short and really useful sentence of Finnish:

(Warning: Use this sentence only in case of emergency, such as if someone hit you in the bar and you have full glass of beer on your hand)

ÄÄLIÖ ÄLÄ LYÖ ÖÖLIÄ LÄIKKYY = Jerk don’t hit me, my beer spilling

Warm regards,

Mikko Nivala, IFSA Veteran, Yogyakarta, Indonesia

IFSA Treasurer 2010-2011, former EFI Liaison Officer and Council

IFSA Consulting member and IFSS 2011 Organising team member

PS. Sorry for spelling and grammatical mistakes if there are any :)

So hot - sauna

The ones who have already checked symposium outline might also have noticed that during two weeks in Finland IFSS participants will get introduced to Finnish sauna culture. Although word sauna appears only once in the outline I promise that you will see and feel sauna more than ever before in your life (Swedish and Danish participants excluded).

See that brown little building between the trees? Yep, that's sauna. (c) J-P Rantonen

Wikipedia article on sauna says that there are over 2 million saunas in Finland - an average of one per household. Wise and nerdy Wikipedia continues by telling that “taking a sauna begins by washing oneself up and then going to sit in the hot room, typically warmed to 80-110 degrees Celsius (170-230 degrees Fahrenheit), for some time. Water is thrown on the hot stones topping the kiuas, a special stove used to warm up the sauna. This produces steam, known as löyly, which increases the moisture and heat within the sauna”.

"I can feel it steaming in the air toniiight" (c) J-P Rantonen.

“Occasionally one uses leafy, fragrant boughs of silver birch called vihta in West Finland and vasta in East Finland to gently beat oneself. This has a relaxing effect on the muscles and also helps in calming the effects of mosquito bites. When the heat begins to feel uncomfortable it is customary to jump into a lake, sea, or a swimming pool, or to have a shower".

Even pineapples like to relax in sauna! You can also see vasta/vihta on the right. (c) Juho-Matti Rossi

"In the winter rolling in the snow or even swimming in a hole cut in the ice, an avanto, is sometimes used as a substitute. Then one usually sits down in the dressing room or the porch of the sauna to enjoy a sausage, along with beer or soft drinks. After cooling one goes back to the hot room and begins the cycle again. The number and duration of cycles varies from person to person according to personal preference...
Thorough washing will end the session of sauna”.

Now some of you must be wondering what the he** and might not be surprised if I continue that it’s more than common to bath naked – mmmm comfy!

Sauna - rolling in the snow - sauna - rolling in the snow - fresh! But what's with the hat? (c) J-P Rantonen

It's time for....LC PRESENTATIOOOONS!

Hello there!

First of all, sorry for being such a wimp and avoiding my duties such as updating you with more than necessary info about IFSS2011. I'm trying to make this up for you one text at a time and is there a better way to start than giving you a brief info about LC presentations!

As every year, also this time each LC is expected to prepare a presentation on a chosen subject. This years subjects and instructions can be seen here. You all have already chosen one of these subjects during registration process. Unless you haven’t, please do so immediately and read this writing before coming to Finland.

I’m sure none of you have even thought about this thing yet so I and Veera (beautiful model in the pictures below) made you an example on HOW TO MAKE A PRESENTATION. Please follow these instructions and you’ll be safe from evil Finns that will stare you with an evil eye unless you haven’t done this on time. Grrrr.

Ok ok, just kidding. But here are some instructions:

Step 1. Decide a subject. That was easy. Here's what Veera chose:

Step 2. Prepare a short (2-4 pages) presentation concerning the matter. You can do it with a computer in your home country and just bring the file to Finland or send it via email to us well beforehand. Actually there is a deadline for sending the presentations and it’s already the end of June!

Step 3. Finish your presentation - in Finland! After your arrival in Finland, we’ll give you ALL necessary materials to build up your presentation. For example, here Veera is attaching printed text and pictures to her presentation - make sure that also you have both text and pictures!

Step 4. Finally the presentation is ready and you can start mentally prepare yourself for possible questions from other students!

OC will prepare exhibitions based on the material you've produced. During the exhibition participants have 1,5-2 hours time to see/look at the presentations. Minimum of one person from each LC is expected to present their work and answer to possible questions made by other students.

There are three exhibitions in total; one in the Southern, one in the Eastern and one in the Northern part of Finland. For example if your LC made a presentation on wood harvesting operations, prepare to present your work in Eastern Finland.

...and that was it, easy! In case of presentation emergency, please do not hesitate to contact us: info(at)ifss2011finland.com !

This country is crazy about ice hockey...

Do you know what's the most popular topic of discussion among Finnish people every year in May?

- Of course world championship tournament of ice hockey!

Tonight will be either big success or big disappointment for approximately 3 million Finns, who will be watching the final match between loving neighbors: Finland and Sweden. (Population of Finland is 5,4 million.) We love and hate Sweden at the same time. By the way we have common history with Swedes, because Finland was a part of Sweden until 1809.

I start to follow the big match! I start to be nervous! I hope that Finland will tonight win the second world championship of ice hockey! Anyway I have to deal this video for you:

PS. Martin, Sweden will lose!!!

------

One day after the big final:

Finland totally bet Sweden! 6-1! Unbelievable! I'm following the parties from TV. There are approximately 80,000 people celebrating in Helsinki. Oh, president of Finland (also patron of IFSS 2011) is there too! :-)

Preparation meeting in Helsinki

I think everyone is interested in how we are doing with our preparation towards next summer's symposium. This brings us to following topic, OC -meeting. We have been organizing many meetings after Symposium in Indonesia 2009, this is to guarantee success of the event! Every time there's a meeting it's going to be long, a really long meeting. This time I'm going to tell about experience on our way to Helsinki. Here we go!

We started our trip in the morning, because meeting in Helsinki would start in 3pm and it takes about 6 hours to drive it, with few stops. Weather was a bit cold but sun was shining. We had to go some places in the beginning so it slowed us down a bit and even the start was delayed. Hopefully our luxurious van was so quick and comfortable so the trip was nice. Acceleration was incredible, you can put pedal to the floor on hills and your speed will not change.

Weather changed before we drove through Lahti and just before Helsinki it started to rain. Quick lunch in Helsinki University's restaurant, some beverages to our meeting and then it started. We don't even have the longest distance to meeting in Helsinki. Distance between Rovaniemi and Helsinki is almost 900km, around 12 hours of driving (with stops).

Meeting started a bit late and it took around 3,5 hours. Lot of things were discussed between OC participants, almost all of us were present at that time. New member of OC was introduced what is going on. People responsible of different areas held presentations of what has change since last meeting, what needs to be done and questions where OC can give answers.

After the meeting we went to SAUNA of course, we are in Finland! Have to say that the sauna was amazing, didn't feel like electricity sauna. Well we had to go standing outside to cool of, it felt nice (it was quite warm +2 or 4 degrees celsius and in sauna around +80). After that people went to different directions, few of us stayed and played some pool. I suck at pool, so losing was my part. When you will come to Finland you can try to challenge Osmo and Mikko.

Then people from Joensuu spend few days in Helsinki, seeing friends etc. before on Sunday we started our journey back to beloved Joensuu. Everything went well, we just noticed that we left Jenni the penny to Helsinki, but we were too far away to turn back! Wuups. Just kidding... On our way back, we changed driver in the midway and kilometers were running fast! I told you earlier that our van wasn't the speedbreaker and we got overtaken quite many times. Crazy Finnish drivers! You will see those more when we hit roads with three big buses. For sure. ;)

Here are again some pictures for your eyes:

Yep, we are still ice-fishing.

Part of the OC.

Mr. Rossi
